Pro Tips
📐
Measure twice. Always re-measure each room before ordering. Add 3–4 inches on each side of every wall to allow for trimming.
🧱
Roll seams. Plan seam placement away from high-traffic walkways. Seams are less visible when they run parallel to the main light source.
🛋️
Pad matters. A 7/16" rebond pad rated 6–8 lb density suits most residential applications. Thicker is not always better — manufacturers specify maximum pad thickness.
💰
Buy extra. Order 10–15% more than measured. Leftover pieces are invaluable for future repairs. Dye lots change between production runs.
🔧
Professional install. DIY carpet installation saves $2–$4/sq yd but requires a knee kicker and power stretcher. Rental tools are available at most hardware stores.
♻️
Disposal. Old carpet removal is typically $0.50–$1.00/sq ft extra. Some installers include it; always confirm before signing a quote.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. 1
Enter your rooms: Type each room's length and width in feet. Give each room a name to identify it. Click Add Room to add more spaces.
  2. 2
Choose a waste factor: Select 10% for standard rooms. Use 15% for rooms with angled walls, alcoves, or patterned carpet that needs matching.
  3. 3
Select roll width: Most residential carpet comes on 12 ft rolls. 13.5 ft and 15 ft rolls are available for wider rooms to minimize seams.
  4. 4
Enter pricing: Input your carpet, pad, and installation prices per square yard. Your installer or retailer will provide these quotes.
  5. 5
Review results: The calculator shows sq yards, sq footage, waste, and full cost breakdown. Use the Room Planner and Cost Breakdown tabs for visuals.

Key Formulas

Total Sq Ft = Σ (L × W) per room
With Waste = Sq Ft × (1 + waste%)
Sq Yards = Sq Ft with Waste ÷ 9
Carpet Cost = Sq Yd × $/sq yd
Total Cost = Carpet + Pad + Install

Glossary

Square Yard (sq yd)
The standard unit carpet is sold by. One square yard = 9 square feet (3 ft × 3 ft).
Waste Factor
Extra carpet ordered to account for cuts, pattern matching, room irregularities, and trimming around walls.
Roll Width
Carpet is manufactured in fixed widths (12 ft, 13.5 ft, 15 ft). Choosing a roll wider than the room eliminates seams.
Seam
A join between two pieces of carpet. Professional installers minimize seams and place them in low-visibility locations.
Carpet Pad / Underlayment
Foam or fiber cushion installed under carpet for comfort, insulation, and extending carpet life. Sold per sq yd.
Pile Height
The length of the carpet fibers above the backing. Low pile (≤0.25") is durable; high pile (>0.5") is softer.
Face Weight
Weight of carpet fibers per sq yd (oz). Higher face weight generally means denser, more durable carpet.
Dye Lot
A batch of carpet dyed at the same time. Always order from the same dye lot for consistent color across a project.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert square feet to square yards?

Divide the square footage by 9. For example, a 180 sq ft room equals 20 sq yards. Carpet retailers and installers price by the square yard, so this conversion is essential when shopping.

Why do I need a waste factor?

Carpet must be cut from a roll that is only available in fixed widths. Cuts around walls, doorways, stairs, and irregular angles always generate offcuts. Patterned carpets need extra for pattern matching. A 10% waste factor is standard for most rooms.

What roll width should I choose?

Choose a roll width wider than your room's shortest dimension to avoid seams. If your room is 11 ft wide, use a 12 ft roll. For rooms wider than 15 ft, seams are unavoidable — a professional installer will place them in less visible areas.

Is carpet pad really necessary?

Yes. Carpet pad (underlayment) cushions the carpet, extends its life by absorbing impact stress on the fibers, improves insulation and soundproofing, and makes the carpet feel more comfortable underfoot. Most carpet warranties require a pad to be valid.

How accurate is this calculator for stairs?

This calculator works best for flat rooms. For stairs, measure the run + rise of each step (typically ~20–24 inches per step), multiply by the stair width, and add that to your total. Add a stair room entry with those dimensions, or plan roughly 2 extra sq ft per step.

What is a typical all-in carpet installation cost?

As of 2026, expect $3–$12 per sq ft all-in (carpet + pad + installation) for mid-range residential carpet. Budget carpet starts around $2/sq ft; premium wool or cut pile runs $12–$20+/sq ft. The calculator defaults assume $25/sq yd carpet, $5/sq yd pad, and $4/sq yd installation.
