Engine RPM at any given road speed is determined entirely by three things: the tire's rolling diameter, the axle (final drive) ratio, and whichever transmission gear is engaged. This calculator applies the standard mph/tire-diameter formula so you can check gearing choices, diagnose an unexpectedly high or low cruising RPM, or plan a tire or gear swap before you buy parts.

How the RPM from Speed Calculator works

The calculator uses RPM = (speed × axle ratio × gear ratio × 336) ÷ tire diameter. The constant 336 converts miles-per-hour and tire diameter in inches directly into wheel revolutions per minute, and multiplying by the total drivetrain ratio (axle ratio × gear ratio) turns wheel RPM into engine RPM. This is the same formula driveline shops and gear-ratio calculators have used for decades — it assumes no wheel slip and a tire at its rated diameter (under- or over-inflated tires shift the real diameter slightly).

Inputs and what they mean

Road speed (mph) is the speed you want to check RPM at. Tire diameter (inches) is the overall rolling diameter of the tire and wheel combined — not just the wheel size — and directly available from a tire size chart or by measuring the tire. Axle ratio is fixed by the differential and doesn't change with gear selection; it's often printed on a tag on the axle housing or in the vehicle's build sheet. Transmission gear ratio changes with every gear — the Multi-Gear Table tab lets you enter every ratio at once to see RPM across the whole gearbox.

Limits and edge cases

This calculator assumes zero wheel slip and a tire at its stated diameter — a heavily worn or under-inflated tire has a slightly smaller effective diameter, which raises real-world RPM above the calculated figure. It doesn't model torque converter slip in automatic transmissions, which can add a few hundred RPM at low speed before the converter locks up. If your measured RPM consistently differs from the calculated value, double-check your tire's actual diameter (tire size labels round to standard sizes) and confirm the axle ratio against the vehicle's build tag rather than relying on the advertised trim-level spec.
