Torque and horsepower are both used to describe how powerful an engine is, but they measure different things and are connected only through engine speed. This calculator converts one to the other using the standard SAE formula, and shows why the two numbers always meet at exactly 5,252 RPM.

How the Torque to Horsepower Calculator works

The calculator uses the SAE formula HP = (Torque × RPM) ÷ 5,252, and its inverse, Torque = (HP × 5,252) ÷ RPM. The 5,252 constant comes from the definition of one mechanical horsepower as 33,000 ft-lb of work per minute, divided by 2π radians per revolution. Because both formulas share that same constant, torque (in lb-ft) and horsepower are always mathematically equal at exactly 5,252 RPM — for any engine, without exception.

Inputs and what they mean

Torque is entered in pound-feet (lb-ft), the standard US unit found on most spec sheets and dyno printouts. Horsepower is the SAE (mechanical) horsepower rating, also standard for US and JDM spec sheets. RPM is the engine speed at which the torque or horsepower figure was measured — always check the spec sheet for this, since a torque or power number without an RPM is incomplete. Both torque/horsepower and RPM must be greater than zero for a result.

Limits and edge cases

This formula only holds for lb-ft and SAE horsepower together — if you're working in metric units (Nm and kW), convert to lb-ft first (multiply Nm by 0.7376) since the metric crossover constant is different (kW = Torque[Nm] × RPM ÷ 9,549, with no matching-number coincidence). The calculator also assumes you already have a real torque or horsepower figure from a dyno, spec sheet, or manufacturer rating — it doesn't estimate output from displacement or other engine characteristics.
