A car's spec sheet lists crank (flywheel) horsepower, but a dyno pull shows a lower number measured at the wheels. The gap is drivetrain loss — power consumed by friction before it ever reaches the pavement. This calculator converts between the two using typical loss percentages for common drivetrain layouts.

How the Wheel Horsepower Calculator works

The calculator applies a single formula in either direction: wheel horsepower equals crank horsepower multiplied by one minus the drivetrain loss fraction (WHP = Crank HP × (1 − Loss%)). Reversing the formula (Crank HP = WHP ÷ (1 − Loss%)) lets you estimate an equivalent crank rating from a measured wheel horsepower figure, such as a chassis dyno printout.

Drivetrain loss presets are based on commonly cited ranges from chassis-dyno testing: RWD manual transmissions typically lose around 15%, RWD automatics around 18% (the torque converter adds a bit more slip), front-wheel drive around 12% (the shortest driveline path), and all-wheel drive 20-25% because power splits across an extra transfer case and differential.

The drivetrain choice has the largest effect on the result: the same 400-crank-hp engine nets roughly 340 whp on a RWD manual but only about 312 whp through an AWD system — a nearly 30-hp swing from drivetrain layout alone.

Limits and edge cases

These are typical loss percentages, not measured values for any specific vehicle. Actual drivetrain loss varies with gear ratio, tire size, ambient temperature, dyno type and calibration, and whether the vehicle was tested in gear or with a direct 1:1 ratio. Two dyno shops can report meaningfully different wheel horsepower for the identical car. Use this calculator for estimates and comparisons, not as a substitute for an actual dyno pull when precision matters — and if you need to compare cars fairly, always compare wheel-to-wheel or crank-to-crank, never one car's wheel number against another's crank spec.
