Buying too little thinset means a mid-project run to the store with wet mortar setting up in the bucket; buying too much wastes money on bags you'll never use. This guide covers how trowel notch size drives coverage, how waste percentage should scale with the job, and when to size up for large-format tile.

Why trowel notch size changes your bag count

A notched trowel doesn't spread mortar evenly across the substrate — it leaves ridges. When you set the tile into those ridges and press down, the ridges flatten and merge into a solid bed. A bigger notch leaves taller, wider ridges, which means more mortar volume per square foot and fewer square feet covered by each 50 lb bag.

That's why a 1/4″ × 1/4″ notch covers roughly 85 sq ft per bag while a 1/2″ × 1/2″ notch covers only about 40 — the larger notch isn't wasting mortar, it's depositing the extra volume that bigger or heavier tile needs for full support.

Matching trowel size to tile size

Manufacturers size their trowel recommendations to the tile itself: small mosaics and tiles under 8 inches only need a small notch, because a thick mortar bed under tiny tile traps air and can cause lippage. Standard 8-16 inch floor and wall tile is comfortable with a 1/4″ × 3/8″ notch. Once tile crosses into the 16-24 inch range, a 3/8″ × 3/8″ notch gives enough coverage to avoid hollow spots.

Large-format tile — anything 24 inches or larger on an edge — usually needs both a 1/2″ × 1/2″ (or bigger) notch on the substrate and back-buttering (troweling a thin layer directly onto the back of the tile). Skipping back-buttering on large-format tile is one of the most common causes of cracked or hollow-sounding tile after installation.

Setting a realistic waste percentage

10% is the standard default and works for straightforward rectangular rooms with a normal number of cuts. Bump it up toward 15-20% for rooms with lots of corners, diagonal layouts, mosaic sheets, or a first-time DIY installer who expects some rework. Because bag counts always round up to a whole bag, small jobs can be more sensitive to waste percentage than large ones — always buy the calculated amount rather than rounding down to save a few dollars, since running out mid-pour with mortar already mixed is far more costly than one extra bag.
