Board and batten looks simple — vertical strips over a flat wall — but getting the spacing to look intentional takes a little math. This guide explains why your actual spacing never exactly matches your target, how the end-battens choice changes the layout, and what to double-check before you start cutting.
Why the calculator solves for the closest match, not an exact one
You can't install a fractional batten, so the number of battens on a wall must be a whole number. Once you fix that whole number, the spacing that fills the wall exactly (with zero leftover) is whatever the arithmetic works out to — it is essentially never precisely your target. This calculator tries every reasonable batten count and picks the one whose resulting spacing lands closest to what you asked for, so you get the best achievable layout rather than a spacing that's off by inches or leaves a gap at one end.
End battens versus a margin at the edges
Whether you place a batten flush against each wall edge is a design choice with real math consequences. With end battens, the two outermost battens sit right at the corners, so the gaps only fall between the n battens — that's n − 1 gaps. Without end battens, the layout instead leaves a margin gap (matching the spacing) before the first batten and after the last one, giving n + 1 gaps. The same wall and spacing target can solve to a noticeably different batten count depending on this single toggle, so decide on the look first, then let the calculator size the rest.
Measure actual width, not nominal size
Lumber is labeled by its nominal size before milling — a "1x3" board is actually about 0.75 in thick by 2.5 in wide once it's dressed at the mill. If you enter the nominal 3 in instead of the actual 2.5 in, every downstream number shifts: the solved batten count, the actual spacing, and the lumber and paint estimates. Always measure a sample board with a tape measure and enter that figure.
Where this calculator doesn't help
The solver assumes one continuous, flat, unobstructed wall section. Outlets, switches, windows, doors, and inside/outside corners all break that assumption — you'll need to plan around them by hand, treating each unobstructed run as its own mini-wall in the calculator. It also doesn't account for horizontal top and bottom rails some board-and-batten designs use; add those as a fixed material cost separately.
