How the calculation works

A caulk or sealant bead is treated as a rectangular ribbon run along the joint — its cross-section is bead width times bead depth. A tube's printed volume, converted to cubic inches, divided by that cross-sectional area gives the total length of bead the tube can lay down. Dividing your total joint length by that per-tube coverage, then rounding up to the next whole tube, gives the number of tubes to buy.

Why bead size matters so much

Because coverage depends on the bead's cross-sectional area, doubling both width and depth doesn't double material use — it quadruples it. A small increase in bead size, whether from an oversized gap or an inconsistent hand with the caulk gun, can push a job from a couple of tubes to many more. Keeping the bead just large enough to fill the gap (rather than over-applying) is the single biggest lever on how many tubes a job needs.

Choosing a tube size for the job

10.1 oz cartridges are the standard size for most caulk guns and are the most widely available. 5.5 oz tubes are common for specialty or higher-cost sealants (like some silicones and adhesives) sold in smaller quantities. 29 oz sausage tubes hold roughly three times the volume of a standard cartridge and are worth it for large, continuous runs — but they require a sausage-style caulk gun rather than a standard cartridge gun.
