A rolling offset happens whenever a pipe needs to shift both vertically and horizontally to get around an obstacle — a joist, a duct, another pipe — while staying connected to the same run. This calculator applies the standard pipefitter's constant-multiplier method to turn a rise-and-set measurement into the travel and run lengths you actually cut and install.
How the Rolling Offset Calculator works
The calculation happens in two steps. First, the rise and set are combined into a single number called the true offset, using the Pythagorean theorem: trueOffset = √(rise² + set²). This is the straight-line diagonal distance between the two pipe centerlines, treating the rise and set as the two legs of a right triangle.
Second, the true offset is multiplied by a constant that depends on the fitting angle you're using. These constants come from standard trigonometric relationships (1 ÷ sin(angle) for travel, 1 ÷ tan(angle) for run) and match the printed constant-multiplier tables that have been used by plumbers and pipefitters for decades. A 45° fitting is the most common choice because its constants are simple round numbers: travel is 1.414× the true offset, and run is exactly 1.000× the true offset.
Inputs and what they mean
Rise and set are both measured in inches, center-to-center, between the two pipe runs you're connecting. Rise is the vertical component; set is the horizontal component. Either one can be zero (a purely vertical or purely horizontal offset), but the calculator needs at least one of them to be nonzero to produce a result.
The fitting angle changes both constants together — a shallower angle (22.5°) produces a gentler, longer bend, while a steeper angle (60°) produces a tighter, shorter one. Fitting takeout is optional: leave it blank to see the center-to-center travel and run, or enter your fitting manufacturer's published takeout value to see the actual pipe length to cut.
Limits and edge cases
This calculator assumes standard elbow fittings at a single consistent angle for both bends in the offset — it does not model mixed-angle offsets, offsets built from more than two fittings, or specialty fittings with non-standard takeout geometry. It also does not account for pipe material bend radius, minimum straight-length requirements between fittings, or local plumbing code clearances. For gas lines, structural penetrations, or any offset in a fire-rated assembly, verify your layout against the applicable code and consult a licensed plumber before cutting pipe.
