This calculator reduces any bar, rod, sheet, or tube to a cross-section area times a length, then multiplies by copper's density to get weight.

How the calculation works

Every copper shape this calculator supports reduces to the same underlying formula: weight = cross-section area × length × density × quantity. The cross-section area depends on the shape — a circle for round bar/rod, a rectangle for rectangular bar and for the width-by-thickness face of sheet, and a ring (outer circle minus inner circle) for tube. Once you have that area, multiplying by the piece's length gives volume, and multiplying volume by copper's density (0.323 lb/in³, or 8.94 g/cm³) gives weight. This is a single fixed density — unlike alloys such as brass or bronze, pure copper doesn't vary much by grade.

Nominal vs. actual dimensions

This calculator uses whatever dimensions you enter, treating them as the actual size of the stock. Mill-produced copper bar, sheet, and tube can run slightly over or under a nominal size — copper pipe, in particular, is sold by nominal size but its actual outer and inner diameters follow published type M/L/K wall-thickness tables. For a rough estimate or shipping-weight budget, nominal dimensions are close enough. For a precise cut list or a quote you're standing behind, check the actual stock dimensions or a supplier's certified weight per foot.

Copper vs. other metals, and why weight matters

Copper is one of the heavier common metals — denser than steel (about 0.284 lb/in³) and roughly 3.3 times denser than aluminum (about 0.0975 lb/in³). That extra weight is one reason copper wiring and plumbing feel substantial in hand, and why shipping and handling costs for copper stock run higher than for the same size in aluminum. This calculator gives physical weight only; it does not include a live scrap or spot price, since copper commodity prices change daily.
