Sheet metal weight matters for shipping quotes, structural support spacing, and material cost comparisons — but the trade's gauge numbering makes it easy to misjudge. This calculator turns a gauge (or a known thickness), a panel size, and a material into a weight you can check against a supplier's quote.
Why gauge numbers are confusing
Gauge is a holdover from wire and sheet manufacturing history, not a unit of length — it's an index into a lookup table, and a higher gauge number means a thinner sheet, the opposite of what most people expect from a size number. Worse, there isn't one universal gauge scale: steel, stainless steel, and galvanized steel share the Manufacturers' Standard Gauge (MSG), while aluminum and other non-ferrous sheet use the separate Brown & Sharpe (B&S) gauge. The same number, say 16-gauge, means 0.0598 inches for steel but a different thickness on the aluminum scale. This calculator looks up the correct thickness for whichever material you select, so you never have to cross-reference two tables by hand.
How the weight calculation works
Once thickness is known — whether from a gauge lookup or a custom value you enter directly — the calculation is straightforward volume times density: length times width times thickness gives volume, and volume times the material's density gives weight. Density figures come from standard engineering reference values for each material's most common grade. Galvanized steel uses the same base density as plain steel, since the zinc coating adds well under 1% to total sheet weight at this calculator's precision.
Comparing materials and reading the gauge chart

The Per Sq Ft tab goes a step further, showing how the same thickness would weigh in each material — useful when you're deciding between, say, steel and aluminum for the same job and want to see the weight tradeoff directly, without re-deriving each material's gauge table by hand.
