How the Syllabus Weighted Grade Calculator works
The calculator multiplies your average score in each category by that category's weight, then adds the results: courseGrade = Σ(categoryAverage × categoryWeight ÷ 100). This mirrors exactly how most instructors compute a weighted final grade from a syllabus grading breakdown. Because the formula is a straightforward weighted sum, the calculator can update your overall grade instantly as you adjust any category's average.
Inputs and what they mean
Each row represents one grading category from your syllabus: a name (Homework, Exams, etc.), a weight (the percentage of your final grade that category is worth), and your average (your current average score in that category, as a percentage). The category weights across your whole course should add up to 100% — the calculator checks this and warns you if the total is off, since a mismatch usually means a category is missing or a weight was copied down incorrectly from the syllabus.
Limits and edge cases
This calculator does not model dropped-lowest-score policies, grade curves, or bonus points layered on top of an existing category — if your syllabus drops your lowest quiz grade, recalculate that category's average by hand before entering it. It also does not solve for a target grade or tell you what score you need on a remaining assignment; it only reports your current overall grade from the categories and averages you've entered so far.
