How the Corn Yield Estimate Calculator works
The calculator applies the standard yield component formula: bu/acre = (ears/acre × kernel rows × kernels/row) / yield factor / 1,000. Ears per acre and kernel counts come directly from your field sample. The yield factor is a stand-in for kernel weight — since this method never actually weighs any grain, it assumes an average number of kernels per bushel (about 90,000, hence the default factor of 90) to convert a raw kernel count into a volume-based yield figure.
Because the formula multiplies four measured or assumed quantities together, small measurement errors compound. That's exactly why agronomists recommend averaging several sample spots rather than relying on a single ear or a single row.
Inputs and what they mean
Ears per acre is usually derived from a row-length sample rather than counted directly — the Ear Count tab handles the conversion from a measured row segment (commonly 1/1000 of an acre) to a per-acre figure. Kernel rows per ear and kernels per row should each be averaged across several representative ears, not taken from the single largest or most convenient ear you find. The yield factor has the largest single effect on the result per unit change — a difference of just 10 (from 80 to 90, for example) shifts the estimate by roughly 10%, so it's worth thinking carefully about whether the season produced lighter or denser-than-average kernels.
Limits and edge cases
The ear-count method is a field estimate, not a measurement — expect it to land within about ±20% of actual harvested yield under normal conditions, and further off in a season with unusual grain fill, disease, or lodging that a simple kernel count can't capture. It also can't account for harvest losses, moisture discounts, or drying costs. Sample well before black layer (physiological maturity) and the kernel-row/kernels-per-row counts may still change as the ear finishes filling — the traditional window is late milk to early dough stage, after ear size and row number are set but before final kernel weight is locked in. For a marketing or insurance decision, always treat a combine yield monitor or actual weighed grain as the definitive number.
