Your ecological footprint measures how much productive land and water your lifestyle demands — for food, shelter, transportation, and everything else you consume — expressed in a single standardized unit called global hectares. This calculator breaks that demand into four everyday categories so you can see which habits move the number most, and compares your result to how much biologically productive area is actually available per person on Earth.
How the calculator works
The calculator sums four category footprints, each in global hectares per person per year (gha/yr): diet (looked up from a meat-heavy/average/vegetarian/vegan tier), housing (scaled from your floor area at 0.00065 gha per square foot), transport (scaled from your annual driving distance at 0.00016 gha per mile), and general consumption (looked up from a low/average/high tier covering goods, services, and waste). The total is then divided by the global average biocapacity of 1.6 gha per person to produce the "Earths needed" ratio.
This is a simplified, educational model in the spirit of Global Footprint Network methodology — not an official GFN calculation. The real GFN National Footprint and Biocapacity Accounts track six distinct land-use types (cropland, grazing land, forest land, fishing grounds, built-up land, and carbon footprint) using detailed national trade and consumption data.
Inputs and what they mean
Diet has an outsized effect because livestock — especially beef and dairy — requires far more cropland, grazing land, and associated carbon footprint per calorie than plant-based foods; moving from a meat-heavy to a vegan diet can cut this category's footprint by more than 70%. Housing size reflects both the built-up land a home occupies and the energy needed to heat, cool, and light it — if you share a home, enter your personal square-footage share (total area divided by occupants) rather than the whole home's size. Transport scales with annual driving distance; this calculator focuses on personal vehicle miles and does not separately model flying, which can be a large addition for frequent air travelers. Consumption level is a broad catch-all for goods, services, and waste — it is the hardest category to estimate precisely and is therefore modeled as a simple three-tier selection.
Limits and edge cases
This calculator is an educational estimate, not a substitute for a full Global Footprint Network assessment or a personal footprint audit. It does not separately account for air travel, home energy source (renewable vs. fossil), water usage, or the footprint embedded in specific big-ticket purchases (a new car, a renovation) — all of which a detailed personal footprint calculator would include. The category constants (diet tiers, per-square-foot housing factor, per-mile transport factor, consumption tiers) are fixed approximations meant to illustrate relative scale and trends, not precise national accounting figures; treat the output as directionally useful rather than a certified measurement.
