How the Self-Rising Flour Substitute Calculator works

The calculator applies the standard test-kitchen ratio: 1½ teaspoons of double-acting baking powder and ¼ teaspoon of salt for every cup of all-purpose flour. Enter your flour amount in cups or grams — gram entries are converted to cups first (using 120 g per cup, the standard spoon-and-level weight), then the same per-cup ratio is applied. The result scales linearly, so doubling the flour doubles both the baking powder and the salt.

Inputs and what they mean

There's one input: the amount of all-purpose flour your recipe calls for, plus a unit toggle for cups or grams. Cups is the more common way U.S. recipes list flour; grams is useful if you're working from a kitchen scale or a recipe written in metric units. There's no need to convert manually — switching the unit re-runs the same math against your entered number.

Limits and edge cases

This ratio assumes standard double-acting baking powder — if you're using a single-acting or aluminum-free brand, the rise timing can differ even though the volume is the same. It also assumes flour is measured by spooning it into the cup and leveling it off; scooping directly from the bag packs in more flour and will throw off the 120 g/cup conversion. And because commercial self-rising flour brands vary slightly in their own baking powder ratio, results made with this substitute may taste marginally saltier or rise slightly differently than a specific store-bought brand — for most biscuit, pancake, and quick-bread recipes the difference is not noticeable.
