How age-tiered mL/kg estimation works
The calculator multiplies body weight in kilograms by a fixed mL/kg reference value for the selected age tier: approximately 100 mL/kg for premature neonates, 85 for term neonates, 80 for infants, 75 for children, 70 for adult males, and 65 for adult females. Why blood volume per kilogram changes with age
Blood volume scales with body weight, but not at a constant ratio across the lifespan. Premature and term neonates carry the highest blood volume per kilogram, reflecting their higher proportion of metabolically active tissue and lower fat mass relative to body weight. This ratio declines through infancy and childhood, converging toward the lower adult values by puberty. Adult male and female values also differ slightly, driven by average differences in body composition — the same reason Nadler's formula uses sex-specific coefficients for adults.
Limits and edge cases
These mL/kg values are population averages compiled from a single pinned reference, not a measurement of any individual patient — actual blood volume varies with body composition, hydration status, gestational age (for neonates), obesity, and pregnancy, none of which this calculator adjusts for. The "child" tier is treated as a single band from about 1 year to puberty, matching standard clinical quick-reference tables rather than finer age subdivisions used in some physiologic research datasets.
