Fresh frozen plasma (FFP) is dosed by body weight, using a standard reference range rather than a single fixed volume. This calculator converts weight into a reference dose range in milliliters and an estimated number of FFP units, so you can see roughly what a typical order looks like.

How FFP dosing is calculated

The standard reference range for FFP dosing is 10 to 15 mL/kg of body weight. For a 70 kg adult, that works out to 700–1,050 mL. This range is a widely cited starting point in transfusion medicine references, intended to raise coagulation factor levels meaningfully without over-transfusing.

Some situations call for a single-point dose rather than a range — for example, using the conservative 10 mL/kg low end in a patient at higher risk of fluid overload, or a custom mL/kg rate set by the treating team based on the specific clinical picture (such as more aggressive dosing in severe coagulopathy from liver disease).

Unit counts and unit-size variation

FFP is dispensed in discrete units rather than an arbitrary volume, so the calculated dose in milliliters has to be rounded up to a whole number of units. A single unit is commonly around 200–250 mL, but the exact volume depends on the blood bank, whether the plasma was separated from whole blood or collected by apheresis, and regional conventions — some jumbo or apheresis-derived units run larger.

Limits and edge cases

This calculator is a reference estimate, not a transfusion order. The decision to transfuse FFP at all, the exact dose, and the infusion rate are clinical decisions made by the treating team or transfusion medicine service, based on the patient's coagulation status, the indication (such as INR correction, multi-factor coagulopathy, or a massive transfusion protocol), and institutional protocol.

Rapid or large-volume infusion carries real risks — transfusion-associated circulatory overload (TACO) and transfusion-related acute lung injury (TRALI) — that this calculator does not model. Always transfuse per institutional protocol with appropriate monitoring.
