Fish oil labels can be confusing: the front of the bottle advertises a total fish oil milligram count (like "1000 mg fish oil"), but the omega-3s doing the work — EPA and DHA — are listed separately on the Supplement Facts panel, often at far lower amounts. This calculator translates your capsule's actual EPA and DHA content into a practical daily capsule count for whatever combined EPA+DHA target you're aiming for.
How the Fish Oil Dose Calculator works
The calculator adds your capsule's EPA and DHA milligrams together to get the combined EPA+DHA delivered per capsule, then divides your daily target by that number. Because you can't take a fractional capsule in practice, the result is rounded up to the next whole capsule, and the calculator shows both the exact (unrounded) figure and the actual milligrams delivered at the rounded count.
Inputs and what they mean
EPA and DHA per capsule come straight from the Supplement Facts panel — not the "1000 mg fish oil" figure on the front label, which includes other fatty acids and oils that aren't EPA or DHA. The daily target is a combined EPA+DHA goal in milligrams; general reference ranges are covered in the Target Reference tab. The optional total-fish-oil-per-capsule field is only used to show potency (what share of the capsule is actually EPA+DHA) — it does not factor into the capsule-count math.
Limits and edge cases
This calculator does simple division and rounding — it does not account for absorption differences between triglyceride and ethyl ester fish oil forms, interactions with medications (including blood thinners), or individual health conditions. If your capsule shows zero combined EPA+DHA, the tool cannot compute a capsule count. For guidance on the right daily target and dose for your specific situation, talk to a doctor or registered dietitian, especially before starting a new supplement or taking a high dose.
