Vitamin A intake is uniquely confusing to track because two different units — RAE and IU — coexist on food and supplement labels, and the conversion between them depends on whether the vitamin A came from an animal or plant source. Why RAE replaced IU as the standard

For decades, vitamin A content on food labels and in supplement formulations was reported in International Units (IU) — an older measurement standard that predates a full understanding of how differently the body processes preformed retinol versus provitamin A carotenoids. The problem with IU is that it does not distinguish between sources: 1,000 IU of retinol and 1,000 IU of beta-carotene sound equivalent, but they deliver very different amounts of usable vitamin A to the body. In 2016, the FDA updated Nutrition Facts labeling requirements to use RAE (Retinol Activity Equivalent) instead, aligning with the NIH and Institute of Medicine's dietary reference intake framework. RAE was designed specifically to correct for the absorption and conversion differences between sources, so a stated RAE amount reflects the vitamin A your body can actually use, regardless of whether it came from liver, fortified milk, or carrots. Why the RDA differs by sex

The Recommended Dietary Allowance for vitamin A is set at 900 mcg RAE/day for adult men and 700 mcg RAE/day for adult women, a difference driven primarily by average body size and associated tissue vitamin A stores rather than any fundamental biological difference in how the vitamin is used. The upper limit and why source matters for safety

Unlike most water-soluble vitamins, vitamin A is fat-soluble and stored in the liver, which means excess preformed vitamin A can accumulate to toxic levels over time — a condition called hypervitaminosis A. The NIH sets the Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) for adults at 3,000 mcg RAE/day of preformed vitamin A, a threshold that becomes realistic to exceed when combining vitamin-A-rich organ meats (liver is exceptionally concentrated) with a daily multivitamin or standalone vitamin A supplement. Critically, this UL applies only to preformed retinol — beta-carotene and other plant-based provitamin A carotenoids have no established UL, because the body downregulates its own conversion rate as intake rises, providing a natural safety buffer that pure retinol does not have.
