The Journey from Ovulation to Implantation
After ovulation, the egg is fertilized in the fallopian tube within 12-24 hours. The resulting embryo takes 5-6 days to travel to the uterus and develop into a blastocyst. Implantation then occurs over 1-3 days as it burrows into the uterine lining.
Why Timing Varies
Implantation can occur anywhere from 6 to 12 days post-ovulation. Later implantation (after day 10) is associated with slightly higher miscarriage rates. Most successful pregnancies implant on days 8-10, according to landmark research by Wilcox et al.
IVF vs. Natural Conception
With IVF, particularly Day 5 blastocyst transfers, the embryo is placed directly into the uterus at an advanced stage. This means implantation can begin within 1-3 days of transfer, compared to 6-12 days post-ovulation for natural conception. Day 3 transfers take longer (3-5 days) because the embryo still needs to develop to blastocyst stage.
Testing Too Early
Home pregnancy tests detect hCG in urine, but hCG does not reach detectable levels until 2-3 days after implantation. Testing before 12 DPO often produces false negatives. Wait until at least 14 DPO or the first day of a missed period for reliability.
