Formula & Methodology
Pounds to Kilograms
kg = lb × 0.453592
One pound equals exactly 0.45359237 kilograms by international definition.
Ounces to Grams
g = oz × 28.3495
One avoirdupois ounce equals 28.3495 grams. Different from the troy ounce (31.1035 g) used for precious metals.
Stone to Kilograms
kg = stone × 6.35029
One stone equals 14 pounds or 6.35029 kilograms. Still used for body weight in the UK and Ireland.
The base metric unit of mass; one thousandth of a kilogram.
Kilogram (kg)
The SI base unit of mass, defined by the Planck constant since 2019.
Pound (lb)
An imperial unit equal to 0.4536 kg; used in the US for body weight and commerce.
Ounce (oz)
One-sixteenth of a pound (28.35 g); used for food portions and postal weight.
Troy Ounce (ozt)
31.1035 g — heavier than the regular ounce; used exclusively for precious metals.
Stone (st)
14 pounds (6.35 kg); traditional UK/Irish unit for body weight.
Metric Ton (t)
1,000 kilograms; used for cargo, industrial, and agricultural measurements.

Mass, Weight, and Why the Distinction Matters
Mass vs. Weight
Mass measures the amount of matter in an object and remains constant regardless of location. Weight is the gravitational force acting on that mass and varies with gravity. On the Moon, you would weigh one-sixth of your Earth weight but your mass would be unchanged. In everyday language the terms are used interchangeably, but scientific contexts require the distinction.
The Kilogram Redefinition
Until 2019, the kilogram was the last SI unit defined by a physical artifact — a platinum-iridium cylinder stored in Paris. It has since been redefined using the Planck constant, ensuring that the kilogram is now based on an unchanging law of physics rather than an object that could gain or lose atoms over time.
Troy vs. Avoirdupois
The troy system predates the imperial system and survives today only for precious metals. A troy ounce (31.1035 g) is about 10% heavier than the avoirdupois ounce (28.3495 g) used for everything else. Gold prices quoted per "ounce" always mean troy ounce — important to know when comparing spot prices to physical weight.
