Stride length — the ground distance covered by one full gait cycle — is the missing link between step count and distance. Knowing yours lets you convert a tracker's step count into miles more accurately than a generic default, or plan how many steps a given route will take.

How the Stride Length Calculator works

The most accurate way to find stride length is to measure it directly: walk or run a known distance, count your steps, and divide the distance by the step count. This works regardless of your height, gait style, or pace, because it captures your real stride rather than an average.

When a measured distance isn't available, the calculator falls back to standing-height ratios drawn from gait-analysis research: walking stride is typically about 0.415 times height, while running stride — which includes an airborne "flight phase" between footfalls — stretches to roughly 0.65 times height. These are population averages, so an individual's actual stride can vary based on leg length proportion, pace, fitness level, and terrain.

Inputs and what they mean

On the "From Steps" tab, enter the distance you covered (miles or kilometers) and the total steps counted over that distance — a smartphone pedometer or a manual tally both work. On the "From Height" tab, enter your standing height (in decimal feet or centimeters) and choose Walk or Run; the calculator applies the matching ratio. The Activity toggle on the Steps tab is for labeling only, since distance ÷ steps is exact no matter the activity.

Most adults have a stride length between 2.1 and 2.7 feet (0.65–0.83 m) walking, and 3–5 feet (0.9–1.5 m) or more running, though sprinters and very tall individuals can exceed that range considerably.

Limits and edge cases

Height-based estimates assume an average build and gait; they will be less accurate for people with unusually long or short legs relative to height, an altered gait from injury, or a very brisk or very relaxed pace that changes stride beyond typical ranges. For anything precision-sensitive — race pacing, treadmill calibration, insole or shoe fitting — use the measured (From Steps) method over a real, ideally longer, distance to average out step-to-step variation.
