Loading a barbell is simple arithmetic until you're under fatigue, working in a hurry, or training in a gym that mixes pounds and kilos. This tool removes the mental math: enter a target, and it tells you exactly which plates go on each side, shows them on a visual bar, and builds your warm-up sets.

How the Barbell Plate Calculator works

The bar is symmetrical, so the calculator first subtracts the bar weight (and any collars) from your target, then divides the remainder in half to get the load for one side. It fills that side using a greedy algorithm: it tries the heaviest plate first and takes as many as fit, then moves down through the denominations. For the standard plate sets — 45/35/25/10/5/2.5 lb or 25/20/15/10/5/2.5/1.25 kg — greedy filling always yields the fewest plates.

If the target lands on a weight the plates can't build exactly, the calculator loads the closest weight below it and tells you how much you're short, so you can decide whether to grab a fractional plate or accept the difference.

Inputs and what they mean

Target total weight is the full weight on the bar, bar included — a 315 lb squat means 315 total. Bar weight defaults to 45 lb / 20 kg but presets cover women's bars and you can type any value for specialty or fixed bars. Collar weight is optional; spring clips are negligible, but 2.5 kg competition collars meaningfully change the plate math. The Available Plates tab lets you remove denominations you don't own so the loadout reflects your actual gym.

Warm-ups and limits

The Warm-Up Sets tab takes your working weight and ramps to it — 40/55/70/85/100% by default, with a shorter three-set scheme and a six-set powerlifting ramp available. Each percentage is rounded down to the closest loadable weight and expanded into a plate plan, so you're never told to load a weight you can't build.

The calculator assumes you have an unlimited supply of each checked plate. If you own only one pair of a denomination, treat the loadout as a guide and adjust by hand. It also models standard round plates only — it won't account for chains, bands, or specialty implements.
