Inputs and what they mean

System capacity is the total coolant volume your vehicle holds — check the owner's manual or a repair database, since it varies widely by engine size and whether the vehicle has a separate heater core loop. Coolant type matters because ethylene glycol and propylene glycol have different freeze-point curves at the same concentration; ethylene glycol is more effective per percent but more toxic, while propylene glycol needs a slightly richer mix for the same protection. You can set the ratio directly as an antifreeze percentage, or flip to "Target freeze point" and let the calculator work backward from the coldest temperature you expect to see.

Limits and edge cases

Never mix above roughly 70% antifreeze concentrate. Past that point the freeze-point curve reverses — pure, undiluted glycol actually freezes around +9°F, which is warmer (worse) than a properly diluted 70/30 mix, and over-concentrated coolant also transfers heat less efficiently, running the engine hotter. This calculator caps its ratio range at 70% for that reason. It also doesn't account for pre-mixed 50/50 jugs (which are already half water — don't dilute them further with a 50/50 target) or partial coolant top-offs in a system that isn't fully drained; for those, apply the same ratio math to just the volume you're adding.
