This calculator applies the ~1 PSI per 10°F rule so you know what to expect before you check your tires, whether that's a cold snap dropping your pressure overnight or a summer heat wave pushing it back up.
How the Tire Pressure by Temperature Calculator works
The calculator takes the PSI you set your tires to (cold, before driving), the outside temperature at that moment, and the current outside temperature. It applies Gay-Lussac's law approximation — about 1 PSI of change for every 10°F the temperature shifts — to estimate your tire's current pressure. This isn't an exact physical simulation; it's the same rule of thumb tire manufacturers and roadside-assistance guides use, accurate enough for everyday decisions about when to add air.
Inputs and what they mean
Cold tire pressure is the PSI reading you took before driving, ideally first thing in the morning or after the car has sat for a few hours. Reference temperature is the outside air temperature at that moment — not the temperature inside a heated garage if you drove out into the cold shortly after. Current temperature is today's outside air temperature. On the Add-Air Guidance tab, recommended cold PSI is your vehicle manufacturer's spec, found on the driver-door jamb sticker — not the maximum pressure printed on the tire's sidewall, which is a different (usually higher) number.
Limits and edge cases
This calculator estimates pressure from temperature alone — it can't detect a slow leak, a puncture, or a valve stem problem, all of which will drop pressure independently of temperature. If your actual gauge reading is meaningfully lower than what this calculator predicts, that's a sign to check for a leak rather than blame the weather. The ~1 PSI per 10°F rule is also a simplification: at very high pressures, very large temperature swings, or unusual tire volumes (like some off-road or towing setups), the real relationship can drift slightly from the approximation. Always take pressure readings cold — a tire that's been driven for even a few miles reads several PSI higher than its true cold pressure, which can make an actually-low tire look fine.
