Towing capacity isn't a single number printed on a sticker — it's what's left over after you subtract your vehicle's own loaded weight from its Gross Combined Weight Rating. This calculator walks through that math so you know exactly how much trailer your specific loadout can safely handle, and checks a real trailer's weight against it.
How the Towing Capacity Calculator works
The calculator starts from GCWR — the manufacturer's ceiling for the tow vehicle (loaded) plus a fully loaded trailer combined. It subtracts your vehicle's curb weight and everything riding in or on it (passengers, cargo, gear) to find how much weight budget is left for a trailer: maxTowing = GCWR − (curbWeight + passengersCargo). On the Trailer Check tab, entering a trailer's loaded weight compares it against that number and reports the remaining margin or the amount by which it's over.
Inputs and what they mean
GCWR and curb weight both come straight from your vehicle's door-jamb sticker or owner's manual — GCWR is usually listed alongside GVWR and payload figures. Passengers & cargo weight is the input people most often underestimate: add up every occupant plus anything in the cab, bed, or roof rack, not just what's obviously heavy. Trailer weight on the second tab should be the trailer's actual loaded weight (from a scale) or its GVWR sticker if you plan to load it to the max.
Limits and edge cases
If curb weight plus passengers/cargo already meets or exceeds GCWR, the vehicle is overloaded before a trailer is even attached — the calculator flags this rather than showing a negative capacity as if it were usable. This calculator checks total combined weight only; it doesn't separately verify tongue weight against payload capacity or check that your hitch and receiver are rated for the trailer's weight — both matter and should be checked with the Trailer Tongue Weight and Payload Capacity calculators. Always defer to the lowest of GCWR, GVWR, hitch rating, and tire rating — whichever number is smallest is the real limit.
