Air changes per hour tells you how many times the air in a room is fully replaced every hour — a key number for sizing bathroom fans, kitchen hoods, and whole-room ventilation. This calculator converts between airflow (CFM), room volume, and ACH so you can check an existing fan or size a new one before you buy it.

How the ACH formula works

ACH = (CFM × 60) ÷ room volume in cubic feet. CFM is a per-minute rate, so multiplying by 60 converts it to cubic feet per hour before dividing by the room's total volume. The result is a ratio — how many complete room-volumes of air move through in an hour — not a fixed amount of air. A small room needs far less CFM than a large one to hit the same ACH.

To go the other direction, rearrange the formula: required CFM = target ACH × room volume ÷ 60. This is the version you use when shopping for a fan — pick a target ACH from published guidance for the room type, plug in the room's volume, and the result is the minimum CFM rating to look for.

Inputs and what they mean

CFM (airflow) comes from a fan or vent's rated capacity, printed on the spec sheet or nameplate. Manufacturer ratings are measured under ideal lab conditions — real-world duct length, elbows, and filters typically cut effective airflow by 20–30%, so treat the rated CFM as an upper bound.

Room volume is floor area times ceiling height, not floor area alone — a 10 ft ceiling moves 25% more air than an 8 ft ceiling for the same footprint. Use the length × width × height helper on the ACH from CFM tab if you don't have the volume calculated already.

Target ACH on the solve-for-CFM tab should come from the Room Type Reference tab or your local building code — residential ventilation standards vary by jurisdiction and room use.

Limits and edge cases

This calculator assumes the full rated CFM reaches the room — it doesn't account for duct static pressure losses, filter resistance, or improperly sized ductwork, all of which reduce real-world airflow below the fan's rating. For a safety-critical install (a windowless bathroom, a gas-appliance kitchen, or a room needing code-mandated ventilation), verify the manufacturer's installed-airflow rating and consult your local building code rather than relying on the nameplate CFM alone.

Whole-house ventilation is measured differently — natural infiltration through a typical home's envelope runs around 0.35 ACH, an order of magnitude below the per-room mechanical targets in the reference table. Don't compare the two directly; they describe different systems (passive leakage vs. a fan actively exchanging air in one room).
