Wainscoting looks precise because its panels line up evenly across a wall — but getting there means solving a small fitting problem: no standard panel width divides most wall widths exactly. This calculator runs that solver for you and totals the rail, stile, and panel (or beadboard sheet) materials you'll need to order.

How the panel-fit solver works

For flat panel and raised panel styles, the wall width has to be covered by whole panels separated by stiles — a stile at each wall end plus one between every pair of panels. Since the panel count has to be a whole number, there's usually no panel width that divides the wall exactly. The calculator searches panel counts starting at 1 and keeps whichever count produces an actual panel width closest to the target width you entered, using a standard 3 in stile.

Beadboard works differently: it's continuous tongue-and-groove sheet stock, not discrete panels between stiles, so the calculator switches to a straightforward sheet count instead — wall width divided by sheet width, rounded up.

Inputs and what they mean

Wall width (feet) is the total span the wainscoting needs to cover. Wainscot height (inches) is how tall the wainscoting runs up the wall — 32-36 in is the most common range, often set to align with a chair rail. Target panel width (inches) is the panel width you'd like; for beadboard, use the width of the sheet stock you're buying instead. Wall width has the biggest effect on panel count, and wainscot height directly drives stile linear footage.

Limits and edge cases

This calculator assumes a single unbroken wall run with no doors, windows, or corners interrupting the panel layout — for walls with openings, measure and calculate each unbroken segment separately. It also assumes a fixed 3 in stile width, which covers most standard 1x4 stock but should be adjusted for by hand if you're using wider or narrower stiles. Always add 10-15% extra material for waste and mis-cuts when ordering lumber.
