An undersized aquarium heater can never hold your target temperature on a cold day, while an oversized one wastes money and risks overheating if the thermostat fails. This calculator turns your tank's volume, the temperature you want to hold, your room's ambient temperature, and whether the tank has a lid into a starting-point wattage recommendation.

How the wattage estimate works

The calculator starts from the classic aquarium-hobbyist rule of thumb: 3 to 5 watts per gallon at a standard ~10°F temperature rise. A covered or hooded tank retains heat better and uses the lower 3 W/gal rate; an open-top tank loses more heat to evaporation and air currents and uses the higher 5 W/gal rate. That base rate is then scaled up or down by your actual temperature rise — the gap between your target water temperature and your room's ambient temperature — relative to the 10°F reference. The final number is rounded up to the nearest heater wattage actually sold at pet stores (25W, 50W, 75W, 100W, 150W, 200W, 250W, or 300W), so you're not left needing a wattage that doesn't exist on the shelf.

Inputs and what they mean

Tank size (gallons) is the total volume of your aquarium and scales the wattage linearly — a bigger tank has more water to heat. Target water temperature is the temperature you want the tank to hold, typically 76–80°F for most tropical community fish. Room temperature is the ambient temperature of the space the tank sits in, and it should reflect your coldest realistic conditions (a winter night, not just a comfortable afternoon) so the heater isn't undersized when it matters most. Tank cover — covered/hooded versus open-top — adjusts how much heat the tank loses to the room; a tight-fitting lid is one of the cheapest ways to reduce the wattage you actually need.

Limits and edge cases

This is a rule-of-thumb starting point, not a guarantee. Real-world heat loss also depends on drafts, exterior-wall placement, water flow from filters and powerheads, and how well-insulated the stand or cabinet is. Always verify the actual water temperature with a thermometer after setup and adjust from there. Very large tanks often heat more evenly with two smaller heaters at opposite ends rather than one large one — the calculator flags this for tanks 75 gallons and up. A target temperature at or below room temperature is not a valid heater-sizing scenario, since a heater can only add heat, never remove it.
