Airlines that accept dogs for checked or cargo-hold travel require a kennel large enough for the animal to stand fully upright, turn around completely, and lie down in a natural position. This calculator applies the standard IATA Live Animals Regulations sizing formula to four body measurements and recommends the smallest compliant crate from the industry's standard travel-kennel size line.

How the Dog Travel Crate Size Calculator works

The International Air Transport Association's Live Animals Regulations (LAR) manual, under Container Requirement 82, defines minimum kennel dimensions from four measurements: nose-to-tail length (A), elbow height (B), shoulder width (C), and standing height (D). The formula is Length = A + B/2, Width = C × 2, and Height = D. Each computed dimension is then rounded up — never down — to the nearest size in the standard commercial travel-kennel line (Sizes 100 through 700), because a crate that's too small violates the regulation even if it's close.

Inputs and what they mean

All four measurements should be taken with the dog standing naturally, not sitting or crouching. Nose-to-tail length and standing height typically have the biggest effect on which size is recommended, since airlines' standard kennel sizes step up in fairly large increments. If you don't have a tape measure handy, the By Weight tab gives a rough size estimate based on typical breed proportions — but it's a starting point only, since two dogs of the same weight can have very different body shapes and require different crate sizes.

Limits and edge cases

This calculator estimates the IATA baseline minimum only. Individual airlines frequently add their own requirements on top — extra interior clearance, combined dog-plus-crate weight limits, embargo dates during hot weather, or breed restrictions (particularly for brachycephalic/flat-faced breeds). Always confirm the exact requirements directly with the airline before booking travel, and never use this tool as your only source for a live-animal transport decision.
