Planting the right amount of seed is a balance: too little and you fall short of your target stand, too much and you waste seed cost on plants the field can't support. This calculator applies the standard agronomic formula — target population divided by expected germination and emergence loss, then converted from seeds to pounds — to help growers and gardeners calculate a defensible seeding rate before they load the drill or planter.

How the Seeding Rate Calculator works

The calculator starts from your target plant population — the stand density you want established in the field — and works backward to figure out how many seeds you need to plant. Because not every seed germinates and not every germinated seed survives to become an established plant, the target population is divided by the combined germination and emergence rate to get the seeds-needed figure: Seeds needed = Target population ÷ (Germination % × Emergence %).

That seed count is then divided by seeds per pound — a crop- and variety-specific value from the seed tag — to convert the requirement from a seed count into pounds of seed per acre, the number that actually matters when ordering seed and calibrating equipment: lbs/acre = Seeds needed per acre ÷ Seeds per pound.

Inputs and what they mean

Target population is the plant stand density you're aiming for, typically set by university extension or seed company agronomic recommendations for your crop, region, and row spacing.

Seeds per pound varies substantially by crop — small seeds like alfalfa can run over 200,000 seeds/lb, while large seeds like corn run around 1,600/lb — and even varies within a crop by variety and seed lot, so always use the number on the current seed tag rather than a remembered figure.

Germination rate comes from the seed tag's lab-tested warm or standard germination result and reflects seed viability under ideal conditions, not what will actually happen in your field.

Emergence rate is optional and, if left blank, defaults to 100% (no additional adjustment beyond germination). Fill it in when you expect real-world losses beyond lab germination — soil crusting, seedling disease, insect feeding, or less-than-ideal planting depth — since these routinely knock several more percentage points off the effective stand.

Limits and edge cases

This calculator estimates the seed quantity needed to reach a target population under a given germination/emergence assumption — it does not account for planter or drill calibration accuracy, seed treatment effects, replant risk from severe weather, or variable-rate seeding by soil zone, all of which can shift the actual rate a grower should use in practice.

Very low germination or emergence inputs (well below typical seed-tag minimums) will produce a very high seeding rate; if your actual seed lot tests that low, consider whether it's worth planting at all versus sourcing higher-quality seed. For high-value or precision-planted crops, always cross-check the calculator's output against your seed dealer's or agronomist's specific recommendation before finalizing an order.
