Body Adiposity Index is a body-fat estimate built from just two measurements — hip circumference and height — with no weight, age, or sex required. Introduced in 2011 research validated against DXA scans, BAI was designed for situations where an accurate scale isn't available. How BAI works

BAI divides hip circumference (in centimetres) by height (in metres) raised to the power of 1.5, then subtracts 18. That specific combination — the 1.5 exponent and the constant — was fitted so the result tracks DXA-measured body-fat percentage in the population the original researchers studied, without needing weight as an input.

That is the entire point of the metric: two people can weigh very differently, but if BAI only reads hip and height, it sidesteps the scale altogether. In field settings, clinics without calibrated scales, or contexts where self-reported weight is unreliable, that is a meaningful practical advantage.

Why hip circumference and height, not weight?

Most body-fat estimation methods — from BMI-based formulas like the Deurenberg equation to bioelectrical impedance — need an accurate body weight as a starting input. Bergman and colleagues set out in 2011 to find a formula that could estimate body fat percentage using only measurements that don't require a scale, motivated partly by research settings in Mexican-American and African-American populations where weighing conditions varied.

Hip circumference turned out to correlate well with total body fat because it reflects both subcutaneous fat and the width of the pelvis, and dividing by height^1.5 normalizes for body size the same way BMI's height-squared term does — just with different measurements.

BAI vs BMI-based body-fat estimates

BMI itself is not a body-fat percentage — it's weight divided by height squared. To get an actual body-fat percentage from BMI, you need a secondary formula (such as Deurenberg's, which also needs age and sex) applied on top of it. That two-step process needs a scale, a birth date, and a sex marker.

BAI collapses that into a single formula using only a tape measure. It is not necessarily more accurate for any individual — both are population-derived approximations — but it is faster to collect and does not fail when a scale is unavailable or unreliable.

Limits and how to use the number

BAI is a population-level screening estimate, not a diagnosis, and it is for informational purposes only — it is not medical advice and cannot replace assessment by a qualified healthcare professional. It does not directly measure body fat; only imaging methods such as DXA do that. Like any regression-derived formula, its accuracy varies by ethnicity, age, and athletic build, and it was validated on adult, non-pregnant populations.
