How the Fielding Percentage Calculator works
The calculator applies the standard formula, FPCT = (PO + A) / (PO + A + E), where the denominator — total chances — represents every ball the fielder had a real opportunity to convert into an out. A fielder who is never charged with an error posts a perfect 1.000, while each additional error lowers the ratio because it adds to total chances without adding to successful plays.
Inputs and what they mean
Putouts (PO) count direct outs the fielder recorded themselves. Assists (A) count plays where the fielder touched the ball but a teammate recorded the out. Errors (E) count misplays the official scorer judged should have produced an out or prevented a runner from advancing. All three inputs are whole numbers and can represent a single game, a season, or a career.
Limits and edge cases
Fielding percentage rewards caution over range — a fielder who avoids difficult plays entirely can post a high FPCT without covering much ground, which is why analysts pair it with range factor, defensive runs saved, or outs above average for a fuller picture. It is also volatile in small samples: with few total chances, one error swings the number dramatically, so early-season or partial-game fielding percentages should be read with that caveat in mind.
