On-base percentage answers a simpler question than batting average: not "how often did this batter get a hit," but "how often did this batter avoid making an out." Because it folds in walks and hit-by-pitches alongside hits, OBP is widely considered a better single-number measure of a hitter's ability to sustain an offense — and it's the foundation of the OPS statistic used everywhere from broadcast graphics to sabermetric research.
Why OBP counts more than just hits
Batting average (hits ÷ at-bats) ignores two of the most repeatable offensive skills in baseball: drawing walks and getting hit by pitches. A batter who works a full count and draws a walk has done exactly what a batter who singles has done — reached base and kept the inning alive — but batting average gives the walk zero credit. OBP fixes that by adding walks (BB) and hit-by-pitches (HBP) to both the numerator (times on base) and the denominator (qualifying plate appearances), so a disciplined hitter with a modest batting average can still post a strong OBP.
Why the denominator isn't just plate appearances
OBP's denominator — at-bats plus walks plus HBP plus sacrifice flies — deliberately leaves out sacrifice bunts and catcher's interference. The reasoning: a sacrifice bunt is usually a manager's tactical decision, not a reflection of the batter's own on-base skill, so it's excluded from both sides of the ratio rather than counted as a failed attempt. A sacrifice fly, by contrast, does count against OBP (it's included in the denominator but not the numerator) because it's typically the batter's own contact quality that produced the out, even though it drove in a run.
Reading OPS — and its limits
OPS (On-base Plus Slugging) simply adds OBP and slugging percentage together. It's popular because it's a single, easy-to-compute number that rewards both getting on base and hitting for power. The trade-off: OPS treats a point of OBP and a point of SLG as equally valuable, even though OBP is generally more predictive of runs scored. Two hitters can post an identical .797 OPS through very different skill sets — one with a high OBP and modest power, the other with an average OBP and real thump — so OPS is best read alongside its two components rather than in isolation.
