Ten-pin bowling looks simple — knock down pins, add them up — but the strike and spare bonuses make scoring surprisingly subtle, and the tenth frame plays by its own rules. This calculator scores a full game the way a league scoresheet does, carrying every bonus forward correctly, and this guide explains the system behind it.

How the bowling score calculator works

A game is ten frames. In each of the first nine frames you get up to two balls to knock down ten pins. Knock them all down on the first ball and it's a strike; clear them across both balls and it's a spare; leave some standing and it's an open frame. The calculator reads the marks you enter for each ball and applies the standard bonus rules: an open frame scores its pins, a spare scores 10 plus the next one ball, and a strike scores 10 plus the next two balls.

Because strikes and spares borrow from balls you haven't bowled yet, the score is computed by looking ahead. The calculator keeps each frame's running total blank until the bonus balls it depends on have been bowled, exactly as a paper scoresheet does — which is why the number under a strike frame can keep changing for two more frames.

Why a strike can be worth more than a spare

Both a strike and a spare clear all ten pins, but the bonus differs. A spare adds only your next single ball; a strike adds your next two. That extra ball is why stringing strikes together is so powerful: in a run of strikes, each frame banks 10 plus two more strikes — the maximum 30 points. Three in a row is called a turkey, and the first of those three frames scores the full 30.

This is also why spares are the foundation of a consistent score. You may not strike every frame, but converting your spares guarantees at least 10 plus a bonus ball each time, and an all-spares game can reach 190 with no strikes at all. The fastest way to raise a score that's stuck below 150 is usually to pick up more spares, not to chase strikes.

The tenth frame and the perfect 300

The tenth frame is special because there is no eleventh frame for its bonus to count in. So the bonus is awarded inside the frame itself: bowl a strike and you get two fill balls; bowl a spare and you get one fill ball; bowl an open frame and you're done after two balls. That's why the tenth frame box has room for up to three balls.

This rule is what makes 300 possible. A perfect game is twelve strikes — one in each of the ten frames plus two strike fill balls in the tenth. Every frame then scores 30, and 10 × 30 = 300. No other combination can reach it, because any non-strike caps a frame below 30. The Perfect Game & Stats tab walks through this arithmetic.

Reading the scoresheet and the notation

League scoresheets use a compact notation that the calculator accepts directly: X for a strike, / for a spare, a digit for pins knocked down, and - (or F for a foul) for zero. You can type the actual pin counts and the calculator will mark spares with a / automatically, or you can enter the marks yourself.

The running totals under each frame are cumulative — the number under frame 5 already includes frames 1 through 4. A blank running total means that frame is waiting on bonus balls. The Max possible figure shows the highest score still reachable if you struck out the rest of the game, which is handy for tracking a clean game in progress.
