Two-stroke engines — chainsaws, trimmers, leaf blowers, older outboards, dirt bikes — need oil mixed directly into the gasoline, since they have no separate oiling system. Get the ratio wrong and you risk fouled plugs and smoke (too much oil) or engine seizure (too little). This calculator batch-mixes multiple containers at once so a full afternoon of yard work or a marina fill-up doesn't mean re-doing the same division problem for every gas can.

How the batch math works

Every container uses the same simple formula: oil = fuel ÷ ratio, adjusted for units (128 fl oz per US gallon, or 1,000 mL per liter). The calculator applies one shared ratio and unit system to every row in the batch table, then sums each container's oil amount and fuel volume into a running total. Switching units or the ratio recalculates every row immediately — there's no need to re-enter fuel volumes.

Choosing the right ratio

The manufacturer's owner's manual is always the authoritative source — ratios vary by equipment age, engine design, and oil quality. As a general reference, most modern handheld equipment (chainsaws, trimmers, blowers) runs 40:1 or 50:1. Older or carbureted outboard motors often call for a richer 24:1-32:1. Vintage or antique small engines can call for as rich as 16:1. Limits and edge cases

This calculator assumes a linear ratio-based mix and does not account for oil density differences between synthetic and conventional two-stroke oils, which are formulated to be measured by volume regardless. It also does not track fuel shelf life — premixed two-stroke fuel degrades faster than plain gasoline and is generally best used within 30-60 days. If your equipment's manual specifies a mix method other than a simple volumetric ratio (rare, but it happens on some older designs), follow the manual instead of this calculator.
