Body frame size is a traditional, easy-to-measure way of estimating overall bone structure — small, medium, or large — using nothing more than your height and wrist circumference. It's most useful as a modifier for ideal-weight and healthy-weight-range estimates, since two people of the same height can have very different amounts of bone and muscle mass.

How the ratio method works

The calculator divides your height by your wrist circumference, using the same unit for both. That single number — the height-to-wrist ratio — is then compared against sex-specific cutoffs derived from the traditional Metropolitan Life Insurance frame-size tables: for men, above 10.4 is small, 9.6 to 10.4 is medium, and below 9.6 is large; for women, above 11.0 is small, 10.1 to 11.0 is medium, and below 10.1 is large.

The logic is simple: a relatively thin wrist for your height (a high ratio) suggests a lighter, smaller-boned frame, while a relatively thick wrist (a low ratio) suggests a heavier, larger-boned frame that can carry more lean mass at a healthy weight.

Inputs and what they mean

Height should be your standing height without shoes, in centimeters or inches. Wrist circumference should be measured at the smallest point just above the wrist bone — not over the hand or further up the forearm — using a soft tape measure pulled snug but not tight. Sex matters because the ratio cutoffs differ between men and women; using the wrong one will shift your classification by roughly one band.

Limits and edge cases

This is a traditional self-screening estimate, not a clinical measurement of bone density or skeletal structure — it doesn't account for individual variation in bone thickness beyond the wrist, muscle mass, or ethnic differences in average anthropometry. It's most commonly used as a quick adjustment to ideal-weight ranges (nudging the target higher for a large frame, lower for a small frame), not as a standalone health metric. If you're near a band boundary, treat the result as approximate rather than exact, and don't use it in place of a body-composition assessment (like DEXA or bioelectrical impedance) or guidance from a healthcare provider.
